4H used to be about cows and growing plants. But in North Carolina, 4H is also about summer camps. North Carolina has several summer camps run by 4H that offer a wide range of experiences and specialties, but the best is Millstone?

Why is Millstone the best? First off, it looks like camp. Too many other camps have cement paths, air conditioned everything and are missing that feel of really being out there. Millstone is rustic. That doesn't mean it isn't safe. It means that the cabins are actually made out of wood, there are dirt paths to everywhere, and you feel like you are in another world. You can't hear a car or a truck for miles!

Millstone has the best variety of activities, too. One week is devoted to horsemanship. Another week is all about fur, fish, and game where campers learn how to better value the animals they trap or kill and get really educated on snakes, birds, and even skeet shooting. There is also a week dedicated to shooting sports. And if you just want to attend regular camp, there are 4 weeks of that which offer activities liek canoeing, more horseback riding, and team building courses that will create memories for the rest of your camper's life!

If you want your children to have a good camping experience that isn't just some company's big back yard full of tents, check out Millstone 4H Education Center. Just like the sign says on the way out, "You will leave here a better person". I know, because I worked there for four summers!

  • As a child I loved these "real" camps. It felt like being in another world. Roughing it was part of our character building experiences. Every child should be offered an opportunity to spend some time in one of these places Sevp.
