1982 Suzuki GS 450L
By Moridin onI purchased this motorcycle, a 1982 GS450L, as my first motorcycle, and what a great choice it has been. I knew that I didn't want a sportbike (or "crotch rocket" as they are sometimes called), but I also wasn't too keen on a Harley. The old "japanese standard" style bikes, like the Suzuki GS and the Honda CB were exactly what I was looking for. And for bonus nostalgia factor, my dad used to drive a japanese standard (Honda CG 360T) when I was a baby.
I bought the bike through ebay and a local seller, who actually delivered the motorcycle to my door. I have had the bike for 2 years now and put 4 thousand miles on it.
Pros: it runs forever, as long as you keep oil in it. The engine seems pretty indestructible, and the carbs haven't needed any work. It's a cruiser style, which I like, and it's not too bad comfort-wise, especially for short trips.
Cons: The bike has had numerous electrical problems that have required a lot of work, and I wouldn't recommend an older bike like this to anyone who didn't want to work on bikes. Also, long trips get uncomfortable. And unfortunately it just doesn't have a good sound, it sounds kinda wimpy.
Overall: a great beginner bike, and a solid classic that will keep you on the road for a long time if you treat it right.

Thanks for the detailed info about the good and not so great aspects of owning this motorcycle.
Too bad about the electrical trouble, but I bet it gets terrific gas milage!!
