2001 Volkswagon Cabrio Gls 2 D Convertible By kateri27 on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
I fell in love with the Cabrio when I was in high school. i wanted one so badly it hurt. When my old car broke down unexpectedly I was excited to get rid of it and get a convertible!
The Cabrio was a beautiful Blue color with a black roof. it had everything I could ever want and need. unfortunately the car also ended up going to the shop more times then I could count.
It was two years old when I bought it, and even then it wasn't quite a smooth ride. A few months after I bought it the air conditioner went out ($1,200), then the rear defroster started to get funky on me, then the windows, then the doors, then, well I sold it.
It was a beautiful car, I had a fabulous time driving it when it wasn't in the shop, but I will probably never buy another volkswagon convertable again!

Gee, I doubt Adolph invented the bug. VW did, yes it was meant to be a peoples car - to make automobiles affordable for everyone - another propaganda idea since they were building the autobahn. Maybe the newer bugs just don't have the same quality as the old ones did. I've always liked the look, but I tell you they are not comfortable, always noisy and somehow claustophobic feeling inside. But, they were incredibly durable and dependable, simple to repair and you could drop in a new engine and keep on trucking. Personally I have never owned one and if I won one tomorrow I'd sell it on the spot. The new models remind me of a Barbie toy - probably last about as long. V:)
They are really cute. Sorry it didn't hold up well though!
I've always wanted a convertible. I'll probably steer away from this one, though. Thanks for the information.
I used to really want one of these, too. Maybe it'sdgood I never got one. I think my convertible days are over now :-)
Too bad it spent so much time in the shop, that's a bummer.
That's so sad that the car you had loved for so long turned out to be such a lemon. My grandfather had a VW station wagon in the 1970' s and I don't think he ever had a bit of trouble with it. I guess the more advanced you get with computers and such, the greater the risk of breakdowns.
My family has also had a lot of bad luck with Volkswagons. The worst part is waiting for your parts to come in if they need to be ordered special...
Couldn't resist commenting on this one. I had a VW Golf, my favorite car in the world. My husband bought it for me when I graduated college. Unfortunately we had problem after problem with it and literally was pushing it to the lot for trade in. It had less than 70 miles on it when we purchased it and ended with about 130,000, not so good. I am a huge fan of German vehicles but have been banned from buying anymore. I think at one time VW was a really good company, but its quality has gone down hill in the past 10 years. But I gotta tell you if something would ever happen to my husband, I'm buying another Golf!!
I had a Volkswagen Jetta many years ago, I bought it new and three days after I purchased it, it was at the dealer (in the shop) for a month!! When I got the car back it never had the same power and the dealer told me I was crazy!!!! I called VW manufacturer, they sent out a representative, the representative said I was correct the car was not running correctly and the car was back in the dealer for a month! They would not submit the car as a lemon becuase they said it was the dealers fault! I traded the car in for a BMW...
