A Good Old Emery Board By Sparkle333 on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
Ladies--if I was on a desert island, one thing I would not want to be without is an emery board. A small beauty tool for sure, but a very necessary one. This pack of Revlon Emery Boards contains ten medium size emery boards. I try to keep emery boards in my pocketbook, as well as my car's glove compartment. It's so embarrassing to be somewhere, and look down and see jagged fingernails. It's happened to me enough that I don't want to be embarrassed again. I am very active with my hands, as most of us are-- typing, housework, cleaning, gardening, etc., and it's so easy to break fingernails and not even notice.
The directions say to file in one direction only, but that's not what I usually do. I use a sawing motion, and it seems to work fine for me. These nail files are very strong, and yet flexible when needed. I never realized until I read the directions, that the coarse brown side can be used for filing and shaping, and the beige side is for smoothing the nail edge. Silly me, I didn't really know that the light side was for smoothing. I prefer a medium size emery board because I can handle it better, and it is a convenient size for my purse. Yes, an emery board is a small luxury, but think how lost we'd be without it.

Guys oughta use them too . . . especially us old ones - they keep the nail healthy. File toward the centerline of the nail - from both sides. The way nails grow, this will keep from making invisible cracks that develop into splits. Advice from a pro (not me). You can file from UNDER the nail, but never file from the top down - it makes the nail thin at the edge and again causes cracks and splits.
I totally agree. It really irks me when I have a snag in my nail. I can only imagine how I would feel if I was on an island sans emery board!
