A Scanner Darkly By freesoma on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

Philip K. Dick's powerful book A Scanner Darkly focuses on many aspects of drug use, culture, surveillance, and human thought. The movie is based on the book, but as usual the book is slightly more in depth than the movie.

This is a great book that can be picked up and read quite quickly; I think I finished this in two days of reading. It is fairly short, which works well for the story, and it is hard to put the book down because of how unique Philip K. Dick's writing style is. I really enjoyed reading this and it definitely has a spot on my top science fiction list.

The story is a very interesting look at social problems and is very surreal at times. There were times when I was asking myself if what I was reading was really happening to the characters or if the reality wasn't as it seemed. A very unique and powerful novel, A Scanner Darkly should be read by all who are looking for a dark look at human existence.
