A Tolkien Miscellany By Jenn Huffer on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
I am a huge fan of Tolkiens writtings. I loved the Lord of the Rings series and his other novels. A Tolkien Miscellany is a collection of J.R.R. Tolkiens shorter stories and so rewritten work that is harder to find. This collection of stories contains 7 stories and an essay.
The stories include:
Smith of Wootton Major - this story is about a town that has a celebration and a Great Cake is baked for this celebration. One year a star was placed in the cake and the boy who found the star in his piece of cake was able t visit the land of the faeries. But when time came to bake another Great Cake the boy had to give up his magical gift.
Farmer Giles of Ham - this story is about a simple farmer who saves his farm from one not so bright giant and ends up becoming the hero of the town and country. Even the King sends his praises. When a dragon comes to the town the towns people turn to their resident hero, Farmer Giles, to save them.
Tree and Leaf - Tree and leaf is an essay written by Tolkien explaining his views and ideas on the Fairy Story. the essay is followed by a short stories called "Leaf by Niggle". This story is about a painter who does not have time to finish his painting while still living but finishes non the less.
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil - You may remember Tom Bombadil from The Fellowship of the Ring. These are a collection of poems written about Tom Bombadil. Some of these poems were supposedly written by Sam Gamgee and Bilbo Baggins.
Sir Gawin and the Green Knight - This is a collection of three translations of three medieval poems. The poems are Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Orfeo and The Pearl.
The hard back version is 369 pages long.
