Adaptation is a movie that was directed by Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovitch, music videos for Fatboy Slim, Beastie Boys and many other artists), and written by Charlie Kaufmann. The movie chronichles Kaufann's problems adapting a book (The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean) into a movie. Charlie and his fictional twin brother are both played by Nicholas Cage, and the movie also stars Meryl Streep (who plays the author of the book) and Chris Cooper. The movie is rated R for strong language, violence, and nudity. The charachters are richly written and portrayed, and they are also somewhat off-center. Chris Cooper was nominated for and won an Oscar for his role of the orchid thief. The movie is only 115 minutes, so its not too long.
