My son is in his 3rd year of soccer and needed some new shin guards. The old ones he had used to rub against his skin so he ended up wearing two pair of socks. One pair under the shinguards, and one pair over. This made him very hot, as well as making his shoes too tight.
So, this year I went on a shinguard hunt and found the perfect pair. The ADidas Pro Club Shinguards have a soft backing that are very comfortable against his skin. This elimiates the need for the extra pair of socks.
They slide on like a sock and have padding around the ankles and the material around the shin is very tough protecting him from all those kicks from other kids. Overall they are very safe and as a mom that makes me happy. He's happy because they are black and silver and "cool" looking. It's not very often we find something to agree on but we really like these Adidas shinguards.

My daughter started playing soccer at 5. She is currently playing in college. Comfortable shin guards are SO important! I'm glad that you found some that work so well for your son. Thank you for sharing!
