Akeelah And The Bee By Apples on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

In honor of one of the students in our school, who is a great speller, we watched the movie Akeelah and the Bee in class. It is a brilliant movie about a young African-American girl that has the talent to become a great speller. With the right coach, she could make it to the national spelling bee. After finding a great spelling coach and mentor, she trains long and hard, hoping to get a chance at glory. She runs through many obstacles throughout the movie, one of them including her own mother. Her mother, afraid that she'll lose and become rejected, doesn't want Akeelah to be participating in the bees, but after talking it through, decides to let her go. Her main opponent in the movie is a young, Chinese boy named Dylan Chiu. Dylan's father pushes him very hard, so he is an amazing speller. I thought this movie was very touching, and is one of my all-time favorites. I highly recommend seeing it!
