An Old Chocolate Friend By Sparkle333 on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

I recently reconnected with an old friend--Whoppers Malted Milk Balls. I was shopping in Bealls Outlet store, and spotted a box near the check-out. I love chocolate, and the next time I was in the store, I picked up another box. I think I'm becoming addicted!

While they are not my most favorite candy, I do enjoy them. They are not overly sweet, but I am a diabetic, and need to watch my sugar intake. So I will try to be more diligent in the future.

I looked of the history of Whoppers, and found that they were formerly called Giants, and made by the Overland Candy Company. After a merger with the Chicago Biscuit Company, Leaf Brands, the candy was reintroduced and called Whoppers. Later, Hershey's bought the company.

Whoppers originally sold at the price of two for a penny. Then smaller Whoppers were packaged in cellophane, and sold five for a penny.

Now Whoppers are generally sold in a cardboard rectangle box (like you see at the movie concession) or in a small milk carton type package. I did not know until I did some research that malted milk balls also come in other flavors, including Reese's Peanut Butter and Strawberry Milkshake.

Whoppers are good for an occasional snack, but be careful that you don't get hooked like I did!
