ARC Thermometer
By missholly onI bought this thermometer because my daughter, who was 6 months old at the time, was running a fever. She screamed the whole way through when we tried to take a temp under her arm, so I thought taking a one-second temperature in her ear would be most comfortable for her.
We ended up buying her the American Red Cross Model: Y7049. I got her home and took her first temp and it was 94.2 degress. We took it again with the same result. We changed the cover for the ear piece and tried it again. I was being careful to do it right. (I'm in nursing school, I'm training to do this.) This time it read 104.6. But she wasn't that hot!
We went to Target the following day and exchanged the thermometer for a new one. Adrianna was feeling better so there was no reason to use the new one. About a month after purchasing our new thermometer I opened it to take my 8 year old sons temperature, it read 93.5!
Do NOT buy this thermometer. It does NOT work. It has matched my regular thermometer maybe 2 or 3 times ever. And even then you have to wedge it into the ear so hard it's painful. This is a horrible thermometer.

I didn't like the ear thermometer I bought either. It was a different brand but just as inaccurate.
Thanks for the heads up on this product...I will steer clear of it:0)
Good to know, I have had many of thermometers for my two daughters.
This is something I need to buy but I'll make sure not to get this brand. Thanks.
In general, ear thermometers do not provide accurate readings in young children - especially those under 1. However, since it didn't work for your son either, I'd say it is probably not a good thermometer. I hope you found something that worked better.
since your are a nursing student i appreciate you opinion of this themometer, thanks.
That's just disgusting! It is difficult enough to try and deal with a sick cranky child without having to hurt him to boot. Maybe you should write this company and complain Miss Holly.
Wow, $30 for a thermometer that doesn't work. That's just absolutely awful. Sounds like this is a common problem with this one.
Thanks for the warning! It's important to know what NOT to buy -- especially when it comes to your children's health. Great info, thank you!
I think these type of themometers can be great for kids, but that sucks to have paid so much money for something that doesn't work...thanks for the warning.
