Ativan is normally prescribed for those who suffer from anxiety. It is very good when you need to calm down or relax from a panic attack or social situation that could cause anxiety. Unlike Prozac or Lexapro and drugs of that ilk, Ativan works similarily to Xanax in which it kicks in quickly and is effective by a half hour or so.

Normally, one .5mg pill is enough for the average person to calm down and feel a serene effect that makes smooth social outgoingness without going overboard. Two pills will make the average person a bit loopy, but mostly tired. The pill works on a superficial level, unlike SSRIs and other anti-depressants. Importantly, Ativan has some hard withdrawal effects if used daily. It can take three days to normally get over sleeplessness and getting used to the artificial calmness that Ativan creates. Despite, this I recommend Ativan for those who need something a bit better than Xanax and suffer from anxiety.
