Barcelo Maya Beach Resort - Riviera Maya

From July 11th until July 18th 2010, I vacationed at the Barcelo Maya Beach resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico. We had a wonderful week over there. The Barcelo resort has 5 all-inclusive hotels in Riviera Maya. They are the Maya Beach, the Maya Caribe, the Maya Tropical, the Maya Colonial and the Maya Palace. The Palace is for adults only. It takes one hour to get to all Barcelo resorts in Riviera Maya from the Cancun International airport.
The beach is better in front of the Beach and Caribe sections. There are many tropical fish in the ocean in front of the hotel and near the quay so if you like snorkeling, its a good place for watching fishes. Most of the time the ocean had big waves and we loved it. Also, I have noticed that the water is a lot warmer than during winter time. It must have been close to 87 F. If you like to swim in a pool, you wont be disappointed because the hotel has a huge one. There is also a bar next to it.
The Barcelo Maya Beach resort has 1 buffet restaurant, 1 snack near the beach and 2 la carte restaurants (Mexican and Grill). The food was good. We could also eat at the snack of the other hotels, except the Palace section. Take note that there is no air conditioning at the restaurants.
Our room was very nice, we had a comfortable king size bed and a small table with 2 chairs. We also had a nice flat screen tv. Unfortunately our refrigerator wasnt working so we had to get ice everyday. There was air conditioning in our room, a good thing because it was very hot outside (close to 110 F).
On the resort, there is a little shopping center called "Plaza Mexicana" and the "Jaguar discotheque". It's about a 10 minute walk to get there from the Barcelo Maya beach section. I like the fact that the resort is big because it is easy and safe to take long walks on the property. There is also internal transportation between all Barcelo Maya resorts from 8am until 2am. If you need to use the internet there are 4-5 computers available at the hotel and it's cheap compared to other places I have been to. It was $3 for 15 minutes. (In St. Lucia it was $15 for 15 minutes).
If you enjoy group activities, several take place at the pool each day like aerobic, water polo, different contests etc...
The Barcelo Maya Beach resort is a 4 star hotel and it is a very nice place to go on vacation. I wouldnt hesitate to go back once again.
Gosh for a 4* resort, why wouldn't they have air conditioning in the restaurants? I want to be cool when I eat and sleep, glad to hear at least your room was cool and it sounds absolutely wonderful otherwise. I'm ready for a vacation again!
Sounds like a nice trip you had! Was there many sightseeing attractions?
Yes, there are many things to do in Riviera Maya. We only visited the Mayan ruins in Tulum but there are plenty of things to do like a visit to Xel Ha natural aquarium park or a visit to Xcaret park. I wanted to visit the pyramid Chichen-Itza but it was like a 3 hour drive to get there.. a bit too far away when you're only there for 1 week... at leas for me...
