Black Decker 22 In. Hedge Trimmer By Tony on - Updated Sep 18, 2011
When I bought my most recent house I needed an hedge trimmer for the many bushes that surrond the house. I looked at many models and settled for one of the less expensive Black and Decker models.
This is a pretty basic electric hedge trimmer. The blades are 22 inches long is fairly light for a piece of power equipment. It seems to do the job, but has trouble with thicker branches. I was a bit surprised that it could not handle more.
It comes with a safety switch, so it is not easily turned on by mistake which is nice. I think this is pretty standard on any thing with a blade, or at least I hope!
My main complaint is not necessarily of the product itself, but more about the choice of electric versus gas powered. If you have a large yard, it is quite difficult to use an electric trimmer on all bushes and trees unless you have a very long extension cord. This can be quite a chore. If I had to do it over again, I would get a gas powered hedge trimmer so I could reach every bush in my yard.
If you have a small area you need to cover, I would recommend this product. If you have a larger yard, I would opt for a gas powered trimmer.
Black & Decker HT22D Purchased at: Home Depot Price: $50

Thanks for the very informative information. We have a small yard now, but when we move, we will be moving a much bigger yard. We will certainly be taking your advice.
I had one of these trimmers and kept cutting through the cord. I had to go manual after that.
I agree Tony about the gas powered for a larger yard. We have an electric and it is a pain hooking up multiple cords to get every single area.
We have a smaller yard, but even then with the set up of our hedges and bushes it makes it necessary to have a gas powered hedge trimmer. I would love it if someone would make a good rechargeable one.
Agree with you that electric trimmer are a bit troublesome since we need long connecting wires to pull to the far end of our garden
You really bring up an excellent point when you say that if you have a large yard that it's not easy to use an electric trimmer.
Black & Decker has always been my trusted brand and surprisingly it has trouble with thicker branches and for larger area it is indeed wise to have gas powered than electric powered to reach the far end of our garden.
Sounds like a nice electric hedge trimmer. I agree with using a gas powered one for larger yards.
I was not so lucky. I purchased one last September to ready for this season. I opened the box and started trimming. I barely finished the first hedge and it started smoking. The little cooler fan inside had stopped. Sadly enough, I exchanged it for another. 15 minutes into the next hedge, this one started to smoke and died. I finished my cutting with my 12 year old 16" B&D electric trimmer. Small and noisy, but it's build better than the new HT22D. I think I'm going gas...
Wow , that little thing, it look neat for something doing such a job..where i am they mostly use the wicker
