We recently found out that we are expecting our second child in January. When I went in to my obgyn's office for my initial appointment, one of the things I was given was a sample of Expecta Lipil DHA supplement. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid. It seems like over the last several years omega-3 fatty acids have been all over the news for their health benefits. One of these benefits is that it supports brain and eye development for babies during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The nurse recommended that I take some sort of DHA supplement and this was one choice. She said that you can take a fish oil supplement also, but that sometimes they leave you with a strong fishy taste in your mouth.

Since I had the samples, I decided to give them a try. I expected to find a huge horsepill that was hard to swallow. However, I found that the softgels were about half the size of my prenatal vitamins and very easy to swallow. The directions states to take one softgel daily with a meal. I have been taking these for several weeks now and have not had any problems with them making me feel nauseous.

If you are expecting, you might check with your doctor about taking a DHA supplement. If she suggests you do, Expecta is a good choice. It does cost a little more than a fish oil supplement, but the box I bought had a coupon in it and I left the doctor's office with 2 coupons, so I think they are pretty easy to find. Just a note, these are not meant to replace your prenatal vitamin. They to take in addition to a prenatal vitamin.
