Bye Bye Itchy Scalp! By autumnleaves on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
I have been dealing with seborrheic dermatitis for too long now. I have tried multiple dandruff shampoo's which seem to work for a while. It takes them several applications and then they stop working. I have frequently looked at the Nizoral shampoo but was skeptical of purchasing it due to it being $9.00 for a 4 ounce bottle an not sure if it would work or if I was wasting my money. Much to my suprise it does work.
The active ingredient is Ketoconazole 1% non-prescription strength. The directions are for children 12 years and older 1 application every 3-4 days for up to 8 weeks. I used it every other day for the first week then 1-3 times a week there after. Even though the directions state it is for 12 years or older my 5 month olds pediatrician approved me to use it on his cradle cap when he was 3 months old.
It really helped the itching and flakiness of my head. I don't find myself sitting at my desk scratching or digging in my head anymore. I am very happy with this product. The smell isnt that bad to me. Kind of smells like selsun blue shampoo. A little bit goes a long way. I have had the 4oz bottle for approximately 2 months and it is still half full. My husband just informed me that he has used my bottle several times as well and really likes it. I would recommend it to anyone dealing with dandruff.
Nizoral A-D Ketoconazole 1% Purchased at: Wal-Mart Price: $8-$9

Dandruff can be SO tough to deal with. Glad you found something that really works. There have been few options for OTC products for this condition in the past.
Interesting that this can be used for cradle cap as well, glad it works for you.
Wow I may have to try this. I have been using coal tar shampoos. What is the active ingredient in this shampoo?
My scalp itches all the time. I tried T-Gel but I couldn't stand the smell, it amde me sick.
I use Head And Shoulders Dry Scalp. It helps but I might try this next time just for a change :0)
I'll have to talk about this to my daughter's pediatrician. I cannot find anything that works for her cradle cap and just today I thought about the fact that I have had dry scalp issues for years and maybe she's going to have the same issues as me. I'm also happy to hear that it's not too expensive or smelly! :)
I've heard that this is very effective, though the cost is high. I wonder if this could be bought as a prescription?
Appreciate the info. I'm going to look for it for my 16 year old son!
Hubby has SD, I'll have to get some of this for him....
This sounds like a great product, thanks for the info.
