Captain Underpants By cukal6 on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
My 6 year old insisted on having this book. I was so excited that he was wanting a chapter book that I agreed. Besides, it's by scholastic, it couldn't be that bad? My friends say I'm a little harsh on this book but I think it is awful for younger children. There are words and actions that I would never approve of. They talk about how the principal hates the students in the school. They also talk about fake doo-doo. There's also a picture in the book of a full toilet. I'm sorry, but that is unacceptable in my opinion. Maybe it's okay for older kids, but definitely not my first grader. It's written as an easy-to-read chapter book for beginning readers. I would consider that 1st and 2nd grade. Maybe I'm wrong, but I would look through this book before you decide to let your younger children read it.

Thanks for the heads up on this book. I think parents should take the time to investigate the books before we buy them for our children. I know it might be suitable for some aged children but it seems like it's too old for your little one.
I managed to have my ds avoid these completely...there are a TON of other quality books for this age group.
Goodness!! I'm glad I hadn't heard of this book before! Totally agree with you that we as parents should take a peek at these books before deciding to let our kids read or not read them.
I agree, I wouldn't start with this book on reading to a small kid. Now my youngest is 8 and this might keep her interested enough to want to read. That takes the act of congress around here. Thanks for the information. I have heard of this one but never read it.
