Charger plates dress up dinnerware

Tired of dirty placemats and want to add a little extra elegance to your table? Try using chargers.

Chargers are large plates that go under your dinner plate and are more or less a decorative element like a placemat. They come in a wide array of shapes, colors and materials that match every kind of dinnerware or table setting. You can use the same dinnerware with different shapes or colors of chargers and change the entire look of the table.

I have several sets of these and usually purchase mine at the after Christmas sales at Target. Target has been carrying these for years and each year they come out with exciting new shapes and colors. Some of the colors I have are ruby red, black, silver and gold. I have round ones, scalloped ones an even square ones.

The set I am reviewing today is my oldest set and it is a ruby red, scalloped edged one. They are sold in sets of 4 and the regular price on them is $9.99. They are made of a heavy plastic material. They are NOT heatproof, microwave or dishwasher safe, this is important to know. They are hand wash only and I have washed this many times with no issues.

While these plates are mainly used as decorations, they are food safe. I use mine not only under plates on the table but as serving pieces too. They work great for cookies and appetizers. When I use them for cookies, I just arrange the cookies directly on the plates. When I am using foods that have a moisture content to them like fruits, veggies and cheeses, I use something under them like a dollies to collect the moisture and make clean up a little easier.

Instead of hard to wash placemats, you may want to pick up a set of charger plates and give them a try instead. I love mine!
