The story is set in AnandNagar aka City of Joy, a slum in the city of Culcutta India. his is a story about a french preist, Paul Lambert, who tried to help people in City of Joy. The central figure of the novel is a rickshaw Puller called Hasari Pal. This Novel revolves around the anand Nagar and gives a picture of how the people of that slum make their life a celebration even in the midst of oddities. A film by the same name was made in 1992 with Ompuri, shabana Azmi in the lead. The novel draws a picture of Culcutta, the poverty sticken stages of human life and hard ship that many people faces to earn their daily bread. The slum have many types of people... from Enunches, to people suffering from leprosy and this story have another carector called MAx, a doctor, who was brought into the slum by Hasari pal.
