Crank Led Lantern By Ben Whynot on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

Of my four types of lanterns this is the best for backpacking. This one does not need fuel, or batteries. This lantern runs off power generated by cranking the built in crank. The LEDs put out a load of light and use the power very conservatively. When I first bought it I cranked it 5 times, and it stayed lit all morning, (about 5 hours) before I shut it off. It is very light, but durable, it is built of tough plastic, and has no heavy batteries in it so it's light. It is not too big for a backpack, although it is a full sized lantern. It is simple to use, crank and turn the dial to high, or low and it gives off plenty of light to light up a campsite, a tent, or to use it to find something dropped on the ground. The LEDs give off white light which is much better on your eyes than the traditional light given off by propane or kerosene lanterns. At 22 dollars you can't beat it. I highly recommend this to anyone.

This sounds like a great lantern. Thanks for sharing.

This actually interests me quite a lot. I just looked it up on the web site. This would be too bulky for backpacking, but would be great for base camping. I just hate buying all those batteries.
