Depo Provera By kristyh on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

I took the Depo-Provera shot for about 2 years. This is a shot you take at the doctor's office every 3 months as a means of birth control. I have also taken birth control pills which gave me headaches, made me moody, did not clear up my skin and which I got pregnant with my oldest son on. So I did not want to go that route and decided to try the Depo Shot. As far as an effective means of birth control it is very effective. You also only have to get a shot once every 3 months and the rest time you are fine. Another side effect is no periods. I liked not having a period but then again how healthy is that? Some of my friends complained of gaining weight. I only gained about 5lbs. Last year I quit taking the Depo shot. I have been diagnosed with mild depression before and I discussed it with my doctor that the shot could possibly be making it worse. So I quit taking it and my symptoms of depression lessened. I would recommend using this as a form of birth control for only about 1-2 years.
