Depo Provera Sub Q, Not The Best Option By cmgilbert on - Updated Sep 18, 2011

I have used Depo Provera as my chosen method of birth control for about 7 years. I have never had any side effects from the original injection formula. Last year, they switched to a new formula called Depo Provera Sub Q. Essentially they switched from an intra-muscular injection( directly in to the muscle) to a subcutaneous ( under the skin) one.

After I began receiving this injection, I suffered from many side effects, the worst being a large indent in my leg at the injection site. Both of my legs now have these marks. I had severe headaches, cramping and mood swings.

I was told by my health care professional that these side effects were fairly common. Needless to say, I have since switched back to the original Depo Provera intra-muscular injection. I would not recommend Depo Provera Sub Q to anyone looking for a new form of birth control.
