We started getting Direct Tv service about four years ago and for the most part have been very happy with it. One reson we decided to switch from cable was the unbelievable number of channels that you get with the satellite. There is always something to watch at any given time. Also the price difference was not really a factor as cable and direct tv are about the same price. The dish is installed on our roof, so one down side is that when there is a lot of rain or snow, it can mess with the signal and reception. Honestly though, there have only been a handful of times when that effected us and it was during major storms. When we signed up with direct tv, we did not get the dvr option, which I regret now. Since we've had our service for four years, our dish is not the latest model. We would have to have them install a different dish and run another cable to our tv. This would enable us to record one show while watching another. I did have the technicians come out one day to do this and they wanted to drill through the siding of the house to run the cable in. I felt annoyed about that especially since with a bit more effort, they could have connected from our basement fairly easily as our ceiling tile had been removed in preparation for new tile to be installed. I might try again and hope for different technicians!

I've had some of the same weather related problems with my satellite tv. At one point we were sent over to "customer retention", since my husband was so angry during a conversation with customer service. We got it all straightened out eventually. And you're right about the technicians, some are good, and some haven't got a clue!
Next time you have an installer out ask them about a wall fishing option. You may have to pay extra, but that's the best way to get them onto the right frame of mind.
I heard many great things about Direct TV. It would drive me crazy if I lost reception during storms though. That's one of the reasons why I haven't switched from digital cable to satellite.
We have direct TV really like it even with the occasional storm outages. We have had less of those than other outages we had with regualr cable.
Keeping my fingers crossed that you did not have the best technicians come out that particular day...you would think the last thing they would want to do is drill through the house!!
We had DirectTV many years ago. I think we switched when they raised the price on us. Good luck with the next technician...the first sounds like he/she was just being lazy.
I use to use Direct years ago. Now I use dish tv. Seem pretty much the same. :)
I believe my parents have Direct TV and they seem to enjoy it quite a lot. I do remember when I still lived at home that it never failed, there was always a rain storm or ice storm when one of our favorite shows was on. They had basic cable at the same time too so as long as the show was on one of the local channels we were good. :o) And I would definitely upgrade to the DVR...once you do you can't live without it!
Sounds like you had some lazy techs come out to your place. I hope you have called and tried to get different techs out by now. We used to have directTv but everytime the weather wasn't good we would lose the channels.
I had no idea that direct TV was so affordable. I thought it was a luxury item that was way out of my price range so honestly I just never looked into it! Thanks so much for the info!
