This is a guidebook for eating at inexpensive restaurants in Japan. However, it is not a guide to specific restaurants, but rather a description of the most popular and commonly available dishes most inexpensive eateries.

The book describes the different categories of restaurants in Japan.

There are sections describing the following categories of food:

- Rice Dishes

- Noodle Dishes

- Sushi

- A La Carte Dishes and Snacks

- Dishes Prepared at the Table

- Chinese Dishes-Japanese Style

- Desserts

- Drinks

There are many color photographs.

The spelling of the dishes is provided in western and Japanese characters. A number of cultural and etiquette issues are covered.

There are several appendices: Japanese Phrases for Restaurant Use, Glossary of Japanese Foods, English Names of Common Foods (and How to Pronounce them in Japanese), Translation of Fish Names. There are also maps of the Tokyo Subway system, Osaka, and Kyoto.
