Economical Family Car With Great Gas Mileage By dsnygrl on - Updated Sep 18, 2011

My last car was my favorite car that I have ever owned a new VW bug. When my children got older and bigger, 13 and 6, we out grew the VW so it was time to find something larger with 4 doors and more cargo room. I searched for months for a car that fit the bill and was affordable and finally settled on a 2007 PT Cruiser. I love having 4 doors and all the extra cargo room although it is not nearly as fun to drive as my bug was. It came with power windows and locks, as well as a cd player which were 2 things I was looking for in a new car. The only option I added to it was a must here in the south and that was air conditioning. I have taken it on 2 long car trips of over 1000 miles and it has performed well both times. It gets good gas milage too. The one thing that has taken me a long time to get used to is the stick shift. On my VW is was short and easy to put in the next gear. The shift on this car has a long shaft similar to a bus and it makes it harder to shift gears on the fly. The other problem I have had with it is the clearance in the front of the car. It clears things like speed bumps ok at low speeds but I have scraped it on several hills and it will not clear the cement parking stops so I have scraped it several times. It has great spilt fold down seats that fold up and against the front seats so it has a huge cargo area. All in all it has been a good choice thus far.

Update Posted on :

I'm not sure if this means anything but I'm going to throw it out there. I have been driving for over 25 years now and have never had this happen in any other car but this one. I don't know if it's nature, the car or the color of the car but we have a bird in our neighborhood who sits on the mirror and looks at himself all day every day and in the 10 months I have owned the car, I have had 5 different birds fly into it while I was driving. I have never had a bird hits any other car I have ever driven. So I don't know why but birds either love or hate this car.

Update Posted on :

In the Spring of 2009 Chrysler announced that they would stop making the Pt Cruiser. Today July 31, 2009 they announced that they will indeed continue producing the Pt Cruiser for at least another year.

Update Posted on :

Today was the last day of production for the PT Cruiser. It has now been retired so if you are interested in purchasing a new one, you better get it soon otherwise there are plenty of older ones out there looking for a new home.

I like the color! I've seen these on the road a lot. I think there's a couple in the neighborhood too. I don't like the shifting you described. That would drive me crazy. I've also seen the PT in a convertible, which was kind of cute.

I LOVE the PT Cruiser! As far as the birds... I have a blue Jeep Liberty, and I've hit birds occasionally driving rural roads to work. I also get a lot more bird droppings on my blue SUV!

I always thought these were a gimmick car till I saw a few for real. They seem very practical, and look cool too!

oh yeah, I don't even consider A/C as something "optional" in the South. It should be standard! Great car to cruise around in. As for the bird - is it a cardinal? They seem to be attracted to car mirrors in my area!

Nice color. The birds have good taste, they must like the color blue.

We had wanted one when they first came out, but my hubby is quite large and tall and it was not comfortable for him. I am tall and found it a bit snug. Our son is also tall and barely fit in the back seat, so we passed and went for an SUV. We recently moved from Orlando but while we were there, these cars were all over the place. It's like the #1 rental car for people visiting Mickey. We'd definitely rent one for a few days though.

We are tall too and we have plenty of room upfront. The back is a little snug but my son who is only 8 is the one who usually sits back there and so far, he is fine. You are totally right about Orlando though. When we drive down there it's sometimes hard to find which car is ours.
