Frolic With Fido In The Surf At Smyrna Dunes Park By crunkyjens on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
My dog Bella and I have discovered a gem of place that we love to travel to. So far we've only gone a couple of times, but we have had so much fun each time we have gone. I'm talking about Smyrna Dunes Park in New Smyrna Beach, FL. Smyrna Dunes Park is one of the few parks in Volusia County that allows man's best friend to accompany you.
Admission into the park costs $3.50 which you pay before you park your car. Once you park your car it's about a five minute walk over the dunes to the water which can be a nice little trek when you are overloaded with beach gear and a excited dog on a leash!
Speaking of a leash. your dogs are to remain on a leash at all times. The first time I was at the park there was someone patrolling the beach and making sure dogs were leashed. The latest time I was there it was very very dead and no one was patrolling so me and a couple other people took our dogs off the leashes and let them play in the water, but stayed with them the whole time to make sure they weren't going to run crazy.
The park can be reached both by car or boat, which I think is very neat. The park also offers pavillons to rent for picnics, and guided nature walks and educational programs.
The park can vary in busyness depending on the day you go. When I went on a Sunday it was extremely packed and I could barely find a parking spot. I just went this past Thursday and there was no one there so I was able to park right up at the front by the beach entrance.
The beach is very nice, and the sand soft but hot. I would say there's about a mile of beach for beach goers and their four legged friends to play around which is plenty of area for me at least.
I think Smyrna Dunes Park is a great place to visit with your dog for some fun in the sun. I know Bella and I are going to make this hopefully a bi-monthly trip, maybe even weekly if we can! If you live in the Central Florida area I would highly suggest you check it out! They also have poop bags on scene if your dog decides to grace the beach with its stinkiness and people seem to keep the beach well cleaned up which is always good.
Smyrna Dunes Park Dog Friendly Beach

It sounds wonderful! Knowing nothing about FL geography, can I ask how far it is from Tampa, where my niece lives? She and her husband love beaches. Of course they have a cat, and I don't think the cat would enjoy the beach as much as a dog does... This sounds like a great time!
Sounds like a wonderful park. Thanks for sharing.
Too bad my lab hates water or we'd be at the dog beach more often! Ha!
My Golden would love a place like this! She loves the water.
Sounds like a great place to visit with a doggie. :)
Sounds great! Thanks for all the details!
oh i have not gone there. thanks for sharing.
Sounds like fun! Any place you can take your dog is on the top of my list.
There are so many places that it's not ok to go romp with your dogs. This is great!
aw, poor dogs. they need to let them roam free!
