Garmin E Trex Summit Gps By Raptor_007 on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

Took this on a 30 mile trek in Colorado a while ago. It worked well for me there and had it on pretty much all day every day of the trek. I brought a lot of batteries along because I feared the they would die quickly, but really they didn't. The unit is good, but not as good (obviously) as those available today. it does take a while to get a usable signal, but it does do a good job saving points and creating routes. The barometer tells you the current elevation instead of relying on the GPS system's guess. I calibrated it at one point where there was a sign stating the elevation, trekked 30 miles and came back to that spot and found that it was accurate to within 12 feet. That was better than I expected. It's a good unit, so if you find one used for a good price, I'd recommend it.

We love to hike in Hawaii and this would be a perfect addition to our equipment. Sometimes we get off track and have to go backwards to get to the path. This would really be a nice gift for the hikers.

I think it is a great idea to take something like this along with you when hiking. Sounds like a pretty nice GPS. For the how helpful it would be I think that it is definitely worth that price.

I didn't know they made GPS system for hikers. I am not a hiker so I guess that is something I would not be aware of. But I think a GPS is a smart idea when you are going on a hike. I am glad this GPS worked out great for you

I've used the Garmin gps mapping system that hooks to the laptop, but never a hand held device, as I haven't had a need for it. But it's good to know that the Garmin makes quality products in both handheld and computer oriented items!

I'm still trying to decide which GPS unit I want, if I want one at all. Thanks for the info.
