Ge Amfm Clock Radio Carbon Monoxide Detector By Bosoxy on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

We needed a new clock radio as our old one had the alarm go out, so my boyfriend ran out to Radio Shack to see what he could find. Imagine my surprise when he walked in the door with a GE AM/FM clock radio with alarm and carbon monoxide detector built in!

Pretty cool, sounding, huh?

The AM/FM clock radio and alarm all work standard and very well. The read out is the basic lit digital numbers. The unit is all white with a gray face.

The carbon monoxide detector is built into the unit itself and has a separate alarm. If the alarm goes off it is supposed to have its own alarm sound, unlike the radio or standard alarm sound so as not to be confused. The alarm has never gone off, however, so I cannot attest to the sound it makes…

On the top of the unit is a red blinking light. This light blinks continuously so that you know that the carbon monoxide detector is functioning properly. During the day the light is barely noticeable unless you look for it, however at night in a dark room the blink can become maddening!

The unit is up high, but the light illuminates the ceiling, like a tiny beacon, and is just too darn bright. What I ended up doing is to put a penny on top of the light to block it from brightening the room. I can still see a bit of the blinking if I look directly at it as the light is a bit recessed into the unit… but it is no longer a problem.

There is not a digital or any type of read out on the amount of carbon dioxide in the room. This is just a basic, either the air is good or it is not. Because of this I would not use this unit as the only detector in the home… however as a back up unit it really isn't a bad idea to have it intergraded into an appliance that we need and use everyday.

We have had the unit for over 5 years and have never had an issue with it. It is a plug in appliance with a back up battery.

Neat combo! I can sympathize with the whole blinking light thing too. My mom put a carbon monoxide tester in my old room at home and did not mention it. I kept seeing this blinking all night on a visit and it was driving me mad not knowing what it was!

I like the idea of a CO2 detector built in... so many people dont' have these in their homes yet, just smoke detectors. Yeah, blinking lights would be a turn-off though!

what a cool combo unit. I totally understand about the light, that would make me insane. The dvr in our bedroom has a bright blue light, I cover it with a towel at night when I go to bed.

That is a really cool clock radio. I had no idea something like that existed, but it's something I could use for my own place. Thanks for sharing.
