Gears of War is a short first person shooter with gritty graphics but an innovative, strategy-intensive online multiplayer mode. It's based around carefully advancing positions and taking cover behind walls, so it's a lot of fun to play on xbox live, except for when your teammates are reckless and just rush into enemy territory. If you only play with your friends and competent people, then multiplayer is fun, which is good because the 6-hour long single player mode feels more like a tutorial than a game. Visually, Gears of War is special; a lot of the textures look gray and noisy, and even if it was going for an emotional effect (maybe the roughness of war), I would have preferred cleaner, more polished graphics. That said, it remains one of the best xbox 360-only shooters, so it's worth it, if only for the lack of choice.
