Golden Gate Park: A San Francisco Treasure By Candida Eittreim on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
I was born in San Francisco and spent most of my early years in the City by the Bay. I love its European ambience and culture. One of all time favorite destinations is Golden Gate Park. This is simply an amazing place to visit. With over 1,000 acres to explore, you could easily take days to see all the park has to offer.
Local history tells us the park was born out of a desire to compete with NY's Central Park. There is no competition, Golden Gate Park wins hands down. What was once an area of dunes and scrub has been transformed into a verdant green oasis. But that's not what makes this destination so unique. Nestled within the park are several of San Francisco's most historic and treasured buildings and sites. Strybing Arboretum, the de Young Museum, Japanese Tea Gardens, Steinhart Aquarium and the Academy of Sciences.
You can visit the Bison Paddock and see our native species grazing peacefully. Or.. visit the stables and take a canter! Take the children to the Childrens Park and let them have a great time on all the swings slides and other neat things they have there.
Visit the oldest building in our park, the Conservatory Of Flowers to enjoy the gorgeous plant life and exotic flowers. when you need to stop and relax between visiting the different places, try the Beach Chalet or the Park Chalet for great food and drinks.
To get the most out of your visit allow 4 days to thoroughly see all there is to enjoy in this gorgeous park. I promise you, you'll never forget the time you spent here.

San Francisco always enchanted me, I've seen it only in movies. I'll have to make the pilgrim one of these days, particularly after reading this interesting and detailed article.

I've been to San Francisco but it was a long time ago. We didn't have much time as we were on a business trip. I'll have to go back someday and take a look at this wonderful park you described.
Ahhh. I want to come. Have been to SF once (quite a while ago), but we did not get to this Park.
My husband & I went there when we visited San Francisco many years ago-it was so peaceful!
I lived in San Fran when I was a little girl (3-5). We left in 1969. I still miss the waterfront and especially the clam chowder.
