Got A Cold Sore? By karlawmcdonald on - Updated Sep 18, 2011
About once every other year I might get a cold sore and I hate them! Usually after a really stressful situation I can almost immediately feel it coming on, it is always in the same exact spot. Needless to say I have tried a wide variety of treatments and nothing you do will really speed up the process, but you can at least make them a little more bearable. I can remember Campho-Phenique as a child, it came in a tiny green bottle and the camphor smell was horrid. The medicated Campho-Phenique has the same smell but is is a gel formula that you can squeeze onto your finger tip and apply where needed. If you ever mistakenly get any in your mouth it is disgusting. All that I can see that this does that makes it worth using is it does dry out the cold sore quicker and numbs it a little bit. It can be used 2 to 3 times a day. I do keep this on hand and it does do what it claims to, but I really hate the tatse and smell of it.
Campho-Phenique cold sore treatment Purchased at: Kroger Price: $2.79

My husband tried this recently and it did dry his cold sore up quickly, but he said it really didn't do anything to help for his pain. Ironically, he never mentioned the smell or the taste, lol. Must be like the comment above, men are tough :).
I know that many swear by this-I've never had a cold sore before but know that it can be extremely painful. My mom used to always say that medicines that tasted & smelled horrible worked the best! She could have been on to something!
I very rarely get cold sores but I will keep this in mind as it sounds effective.
I need to tell my daughter about this product. Thanks for sharing this very helpful information.
Have to tell my sister about this, thanks
If the cold sore isn't viral in nature then nothing works better than Campho-Phenique. It does effectively dry up fever blisters without burning or discomfort.
I remember laughing at how my little ol' Grandmother would pronounce this when I was little
My fiance gets cold sores and hates them.. We have tried everything.. Including the $25 a bottle abreva, which didn't work well. We will definately give this a shot.
I too get cold sores and hate them! I will try this next time one appears
I always have this stuff in our medicine cabinet. It's great for any kind of cut too.
