Great Alternative To Salon Highlights By Jallyson on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

A couple of months ago my teenager asked if she could have highlights in her hair. Knowing full well how much highlights cost in a salon, I told her no way!

So tonight she comes home with this little box in her hand- it was L'Oreal's Forst & Design Highlighting kit. She had picked it up and figured we could try it. I was a bit apprehensive, fearing it might look stripey or orange, and since she has school pictures in two days, there was much at stake. I needn't have worried, though, since these highlights came out truly beautiful.

The system is very easy to use- there's a plastice bonnet with holes that you put over the hair, then you use a little crochet hook to pull through strands. Then you place the lightener on each strand, wait a length of time dependent on hair color, then rinse. It's really that simple. It's a bit time consuming (especially if you have long hair, which my teen does!), but well worth it. There are also several diagrams showing how to pull the hair through the cap for different effects, or for different lengths of hair. The instructions were well written, and exceedingly easy to follow. The smell was not at all bad, either, a bit bleachy, but not overpowering in the least.

So my teenager is now thrilled with her hair, I saved over $100 at the salon, and everyone is happy. I may even try it on myself!
