Hand Made Kauaiian Soap By Jan Mayrhofer on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

This year when we went to Kauai on vacation, I decided ahead of time that I did not want to spend my precious vacation time in the tourist- trap stores hunting for cheap souvenirs for my loved ones back home. I've already been there and done that! The beach is where I want to be!

There are, however some shops in Kauai that are worth a visit if you have the time to spare, and that is how I discovered Island Soap and Candle Works. The shop is located in a quaint little shopping “mall” called Kong Lung Center. (Also located here is the Kilauea Bakery, our favorite bakery in the whole world!) At Island Soap & Candle Works you are encouraged to watch the soaps and candles being created from start to finish while enjoying the friendly, Hawaiian atmosphere.

I enjoyed visiting there the last time in Kauai, but this time I wanted to spend every possible moment on the beach. So I cheated, and used their website to buy my souvenirs. I shopped in the unhurried, laid-back comfort of home, a month before we left on vacation. This allowed plenty of time for delivery, and my shopping was done!

Of course, I had to buy some for myself as well. Let me tell you about it…the soaps and candles are wonderful! The glycerin soaps are the ones I bought and I love the way they feel on my skin. They make a surprising amount of lather and the fragrances are very authentic. Pineapple is my favorite, but some others they offer are plumeria, mango coconut, and strawberry guava. Besides the soap, the floating candles I bought are really cute. The wax is bright yellow with a lovely pineapple fragrance. While the wax is hot, it is poured into a polished coconut shell. This is what makes it float, and it makes a simple, very tropical souvenir/gift.

If you need a nice gift from Hawaii, or want to pamper yourself with these great, handmade products, check out their website at http://islandsoap.com/. Or, better yet, go and visit them yourself at my favorite vacation haven – Kauai! It's on the North Shore on the way to the Kilauea Lighthouse. Aloha!

I think I remember seeing these from a trip a few years ago. It sounds like I should have looked closer.
