Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is a place that is dear to my heart. I grew up in the town surrounding the park. And let me tell you there is alot to do here in Harpers Ferry. It is located in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia about one hour out side of Washington DC. It is easy to get here by the train or just a short drive. The is the perfect time of year to head out of the city towards a country style of life. The leaves are turning and it is beautiful here in Harpers Ferry. There is a lot to do here in Harpers Ferry. There are the historical tours that take you through the town which has been restored to the days of John Brown.John Brown was an Abolitionist who made his fight here in Harpers Ferry. Harpers Ferry belonged to the state of Virginia at the time but it was also home to the U.S Armory. John Brown raided the armory in 1859 in hopes to arm slaves with its weapons. In the raid Brown killed 7 people including on freed black man. Here you can go through the Wax Museum and get a feel for what life was like during John Brown's time. See wax figures of the famous man and historical notes about him too. There are all kinds of shops down in the Historical Harpers Ferry as well as trails for hikes and even a climb to the top of Jefferson's Rock is a must when visiting Harpers Ferry. The best part is that it can be inexpensive to visit. Pack a lunch and enjoy it on the one of the many battle fields or lawns in the town. Know I will warn you it can get expensive if you plan to eat in the town at one of the restuarants. But it is rather cheap to park at the visitor's station and enjoy a bus ride down to the historical town. This is a great learning experience for the kids and I have taken many field trips my self down into the town of Harpers Ferry.
