How does your Gazing Ball Shine?
By rogue34 onMy dad had been telling me for years that he wanted a gazing ball for his little circular flower garden in his front yard. So last year for Father's Day, I bought him a silver-colored one. I looked for a while and then purchased one at PlowandHearth.com.
The price was reasonable and the materials seemed to be perfect. I had thought about a glass gazing ball. However, you have to be careful that you bring those in when the weather turns cold because they could crack or break. The stainless steel version I bought does not have that problem. You can leave it out all winter if you want.
Why didn't I give it a five in the materials rating you ask? Well, I did not realize the actual weight of the ball. The website did not give out that information. When I got the ball, I discovered it was incredibly light. So light, my dad was afraid it might blow away. I really doubt it would, but he was almost scared to put it outside. I also got him a little low stand for it to sit in, so it is a bit more secure. I think it looks very nice in his little flower garden.
I'm mostly happy with this piece of decor, but I do wish it had been a bit heavier.

I didn't really think about the differences between stainless steel & glass balls with glass balls potentially cracking in the winter-smart call on your part to get the stainless steel ball!!! Hopefully it will stay put & not blow away!!!
I've always thought these were so pretty but have been reluctant to buy them because I'm afraid neighborhood kids would mess with them. I always assumed they would be really heavy, so I surprised to hear that they are not. I wonder if it would stay put during a bad thunderstorm?
Seems like you could use some sort of adhesive or caulk to hold it in its stand.
A pinhole sizes drill, and some water will secure that ball. I have been there on that 1 :) Use a dropper to fill the ball. Tediuos, but works!
Sounds like a great gift for people who likegardening or decorating their yards nicely. :)
I love gazing balls. When you mentioned it was metal and then talked about the weight, I expected you to say it was heavy not light, how crazy is that?
We have an house that is an 110yr old victiorian. Beautiful house but the yards is UGLY! I think that this might look good in your yard that we are trying to make as stunning as our house. :)
I'd fill it with about 3 inches of sand to weight it Rogue. The glass balls are quite fragile, making these a much better choice. I had a glass one for all of 4 hours, when a stray softball cracked it almost in two.
A good choice for your Dad's garden. The stainless steel will withstand the weather better. Although, I was surprised when you said it was so light. Puting water or sand in it to weigh it down is an excellent option.
