Hp Pavillion pitfalls

Reviewing: Hp Pavillion
Purchased at: Bj's Warehouse     Price: $1,599.00 USD

I purchased this laptop four years ago for my husband and I to use as our main family computer. We needed something portable because we travel and are out of the house alot. We picked this model for the features which included a large hard drive, large screen and dvd recorder. The software has all been great and we have hardly used half of the space on the drive. We don't do alot of movie downloading or anything like that though so that is probably why.

The biggest issue we have had with this unit is with the battery/ charging system and the hinges for the screen. It has been sent to the shop twice for both problems. The plug tends to break the connection between the place you plug it in and the system that charges the battery. Which in turn wears out the battery super fast. Not very handy in a laptop because you have to leave it plugged in all the time! Also, the hinges on the screen are apparently not strong enough to hold it up over time. We have had them replaced twice and they are broken again!

Overall its a good computer but I wouldn't recommend it if you plan to do much travelling or out of the house work on it.

Nothing is worse than a weak battery. I hate that.

I just got my first laptop and I was concerned with the hinges on the screen wearing out like you said. My hubby told me unless I abused it, it would not be a problem, thanks for proving him wrong. My computer was alot less than yours though and for that price I too would expect better quality.

Wow, it crashed. Well, you did get 4 years out of it. I would expect they'd last longer for that amount. Our desktop is HP and we're going on 6 years--we added a lot to it so it's not "OLD," really. Time for a new addition soon though. Hubby wants a laptop this time. Thanks for the information.

I am considering getting a laptop this information is very useful. My PC crashed a few months ago, it was two years old. Frustration personified.

Man, I just hate it when things that are so expensive don't last worth beans. I think I'll avoid this. That hinge problem is totally annoying.

Hinges can be a big problem for a laptop. My son had his replaced twice while under warranty, then they went again! To have them replaced would have been too expensive at the point that it was older than four years old, so he ended up going with an iMac.
