Human Powered Edger By Peterson on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
I still own my dad's old lawn edger. It is an incredibly efficient way of getting all the grass and weeds out from between the pavement blocks, and around our driveway. It takes a bit of pressure to get it started in the nooks and crannies, but once it's in, it is IN!!
This must be at least 40 yrs old, and I've only had it sharpened once, about 6 years ago. It needed it badly and my body needed a break.
I keep it sharp by being carefull not to use it where there are stones, gravel or "hidden" concrete. I can tell if that's the case just by looking at the weeds or rather the lack of weeds growing next to a block.
It does take a bit of muscle, and I can not use it this year, neither could I use it last year, but I still oil the blade every fall and spring so the blade doesn't get dull. I never leave it on a surface blade-side down, either.
When I do use it, I am happy to know that I'm not polluting the earth at all (except for the very, very thin layer of oil I can't remove with a clean rag.
I believe this was bought at Sears, as that's where my dad bought the very few tools he had.
My sister let me know this is a Sears brand Edger. She remembers my dad received this gratis when he made a complaint about another Sears Brand tool. Apparently we can not earn anything from reviews with no price, so please save your vote if you are only looking to make money. This was was sold at Sears (I think it was still Sears Roebuck and Compny at the time.) Thank you for reading this!!

LOL, when we bought this house, I looked high and low for a regular "old fashioned" edger like this...they are very hard to come by these days but work great.
It would be great if you could add a picture, but I'm always in favor of muscle-powered tools where practical.
Glad that your dad had left such great tools for you. Thanks for sharing your gardening experience with us.
My father in law had this edger and it always did a superb job creating nice deep tidy edges to his 1/4 acre of lawns. We still have it after 18 years, and yes it works as well today as it did when new.
I think these old fashioned human power edgers do work wonders and they really give the arm muscles a workout!
