If you just want a place to save your money and not worry about checks, ING is a great place to put it. I have some money that I'm not going to touch, but I wanted to make some interest on it. I like ING's interface. It shows you how much interest you've made every day! Their interest rates have gone down recently, so shop around for the best rate. It's a very easy interface and you can get an account quickly. They also have a checking account where you can get an ATM card so you can access your money. The only drawback is that it takes a few days for deposits/withdrawals to clear, but you start earning interest on it even before it get finalized. I love ING and will continue to use it for a long time.
