Keeper Bungee Cords A Classic Keeper By Joan Young on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

These are the standard bungee cords you've been using for decades. Basic utility at a good price.

I thought all bungee cords were the same until I bought the Highland Heavy Duty ones reviewed elsewhere on this site. Those were awful; I had not ever realized what huge differences there could be in something we use all the time and take for granted. So this time I vowed to find the familiar cords. And I did find them.

This pack contains two 24" x 8 mm cords. The hooks are plastic coated wire, and the wire is the full length of the hook (not shorter like the others.) You can grab your pliers and make the hook wider or narrower as you need.

The bottom of the hook is wound like a spring into a pocket to hold the folded and crimped end of the cord. Again, just what we've come to expect, but not true of all bungee cords. The advantage of this is that if the cord breaks near one end, or pulls out, you can repair the cord, or maybe make a shorter one. As we all know, in a pinch you can just tie the cord in an overhand knot to keep it from slipping through the hook fastener. But did you ever really appreciate how elegant that is in its simplicity?

I did have to fight to get the crimped over bungee end to pull down tight into the hook pocket, but as you can see in the photo, I succeeded.

These really are very good bungees. David always had a couple of packs of these handy. And the price is very reasonable considering the use they get.

Nice to hear about some man! I've had my share of good ones and half-assed ones. They were all "hand-me-downs" from my dad or grandfather. Once those wear out, I'm going to look into these! How do they hold up to the elements over extended periods? You might update later on to let us know if they start to fall apart after a month or something, lol.

I had these outside all winter (Michigan) holding the tarp on my snowblower and they are doing fine. Of course, they'll eventually shred, but not a hint of it yet!
