Little House On The Prairie By cafn8me on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
As a little girl, I was given the complete Little House on the Prairie series by a family friend. I read and re-read each of these books at least three dozen times from the age of 7 until I was in high school. The story of Laura and her family, which was later made into a hugely popular TV series, captured my attention and gave me a clear idea of how life had been for children in the late 1800s. The gorgeous illustrations by Garth Williams helped me visualize the author's beautiful descriptions of life with her family on the American frontier. I savored each chapter, and I now credit this series and its author with giving me an absolute love of books and reading.
Even before I was out of high school, I decided that I would save my precious Little House books for the daughter I planned to have one day. I wrapped them carefully and put them away for the future. Well, I am delighted to tell you that the future is here, since my now-7-year-old daughter and I have just begun reading Little House in the Big Woods, which is the first book in the series. Reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's familiar words again transports me back to my childhood, and my daughter is already a huge fan!
The boxed set includes the following titles: Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie, Farmer Boy, On the Banks of Plum Creek, By the Shores of Silver Lake, The Long Winter, Little Town on the Prairie, These Happy Golden Years, and The First Four Years. Each of these books is an absolute treasure. They are sure to give your child hours of pleasure, free of the ubiquitous violence and inappropriate content that is so frighteningly prevalent in so much of our children's lives these days.
