I was lucky enough to visit London numerous times during my semester studying abroad. This might be part of the problem. London was not my favorite European town by any means. The first morning I was there with friends, I walked into a post office to ask for some directions. The guy behind the counter looked at me and said "that's not my job" in the snottiest manner possible. Its the post office, they know where everything is! I did really enjoy the sights of London. Tower Bridge, Big Ben and the Tate Modern were my favorite "tourist" spots. Westminster Abbey was just kinda creepy. One thing that really bugs me about London, and Europe in general is that they charge admission for their churches. I understand that they have bills to pay, but I thought that is what tithing was for? Hotels in London run the gamut of price ranges and comfort levels. Here's another tip for Americans staying in Europe...most beds are twin. My five friends and myself thought that we could easily share one room because it had three beds! This was a mistake to say the least. Also, we were in a pretty low budget place, so I could here our neighbors yelling at each other in spanish every few minutes. We thought that being near a tube station would be a good idea. It wasn't. We could here the Victoria line car every time it passed under our basement room...which was about every two minutes. All night long. All in all, London is a must see if you are traveling to Europe. Go to the Tower of London, Buchingham Palace, the National Gallery, all that jazz. The sights are great, the people a little standoffish (what else would be expect?) and the hotels...well...you get what you pay for!
