Luyben Ligature: Great Tone, Dirt Cheap By Blazewood on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

The Luyben clarinet ligature's best quality is its price: at under $10, it is the cheapest ligature on the market that still offers superb performance and tone quality. With easily adjusted screws that change the tightness of the ligature on the mouthpiece, the ligature can help you get the best sound out of your reed. It is made out of a durable, flexible plastic that won't add any weight to your clarinet case. For best results, after purchasing tighten the screws all the way and leave in this position, without using it on the clarinet, for three days. After three days, the ligature should be more limber and adjust to your mouthpiece. For more resistance during playing, place the ligature just beneath the bottom curve of the shaved part of the reed. For less resistance, lower the ligature on the reed as much as desired.
