Make Your Own Clothes Detergent By donnabc on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
Have you ever made your OWN clothes detergent? No? Well, if you want to save some money, you should get you some SUPER WASHING SODA and make some! It is somewhat difficult to find; not all stores carry it. If they do, it will be in with the laundry powder and borax (I've seen it at Walmart and Krogers).
I have been surfing the web looking for ways to cut down my monthly expenses. Buying Tide Free is one thing I have given up. At $5 a jug (for 26 loads...and that's on sale), I am saving loads...no pun intended, LOL. I now spend LESS and $1 to make my homemade soap and IT washes about 100 loads!
Ok, are you "sold" so to say now? If so, here's the recipe:
Grate one bar of Ivory soap into a pan. Add some water (enough to cover the soap). Heat and stir until the soap is melted. Add 1/2 cup WASHING SODA and 1/2 cup Borax. Stir until dissolved. (it will foam up). Pour into a 2 gallon container and add water...makes 2 gallons. Use 1/2 cup per load of laundry.
The "soap" won't suds up as much as the store bought soap but it DOES clean good and will save you some money :0)

I've heard of this and have wanted to try it...but haven't had luck finding the Super Washing Soda yet... of course the Wal-mart in my end of the city is in my opinion the worst on the planet :) Will have to keep this in mind and try the recipe...sounds easy enough and if it works...great way to cut costs for certain. Thanks for the info!

What a great idea. I've been making my own Windex for years.
