A terrific movie that underscores the relationships that develop as children and through one event, change the course of that friendship over the years. Based on a book by Dennis Lehane, Sean Penn's character (Jimmy) is a thinly disguised man on the edge of the law, Kevin Bacon's character (Sean) has grown to become a police officer and Tim Robbin's (Dave) has grown to become a weak, due to the event in that changed their relationship, but is a devoted husband. Jimmy's daughter is murdered and Dave becomes a key suspect in the old neighborhood while Sean is the investigating officer. A thriller that only grows bolder and clearer toward the end of the movie, climaxing in a ending no one could have predicted.

This movie is unpredictable, and keeps you interested all the way through its 138 minutes. It is rated R for language and violence, and I would not recommend this to young children. Definitely adult themes here. It has all the elements that make a good movie great- amazing actors, a wonderful script, and spot-on directing. I love how it shows how friendships change and move over time- all of the characters are very down-to-earch and believable. I definitely would recommend this movie to anyone.
