Nec Dvd Rw Dvdcd Burner Writer By John Gugie on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
is is a good DVD/CD burner that can be used internally or externally with a USB cable. I had to install a USB 2.0 port on my computer and once I did, it works perfectly at its maximum 16x speed.
It supports the following media DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R9, CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW at the following speeds.
DVD +R: 16x max.
DVD-R: 16x max.
DVD+RW: 8x max.
DVD-RW: 6x max.
CD-R: 48x max.
CD-RW: 32x max.
It has a motorized tray loader for horizontal and vertical use.
It does have a few negatives. I noticed that this burner burns DVDs perfectly at full speeds but not CDs. CDs seem to burn at about 25 percent of what they're supposed to. Luckily, my PC has a built-in CD burner, which works at full speed. I only bought this for DVDs anyway.
The other thing I noticed is that it rips DVDs at about half of what my PC's DVD ROM drive does it. Also, viewing DVDs on it tends to skip at times and freezes up on fastforward.
If you mainly just want a good DVD burner and not a CD burner or DVD reader drive, this is for you. I use the USB. It might work better if directly connected internally to your computer.

Sounds like an uncomplicated burner to use as a backup. Thanks for the info.
