Netgear Is Not A Linksys That Is Not A Bad Thing By jb_shops on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
I've had various routers at different times and places and for a home environment. I am pleased to recommend the Netgear WGR614 wireless-g router.
I believe most home users are looking for something simple to set-up, simple to operate, and relatively secure. This met all of these for the most part.
Why not go with Linksys? Doesn't everyone use Linksys? Three reasons: 1) everyone has Linksys, so I think there is some security benefits by having something different from what everyone else has; 2) I've had some personal bad luck with a couple of my Linksys products; 3) the Netgear unit looks much nicer - the white case uses some Apple inspiration in the design.
Pluses:
- very good 802.11g speed
- decent range
- easy to set-up
- on-screen definition & help on configuration screen
Minuses:
- doesn't perform as great on 802.11b
- configuration screen could be improved for advanced users
Note: security is definitely relative as my dad used to say, "A lock keeps an honest man honest". You are welcome to pay or add-on for much more secure appliances and applications, but I'm looking for that balance.

My Dad bought me a Netgear wireless router when I moved into my new apartment. I haven't had any problems with it and it's a brand my Dad swears by! :o) And I agree, I think it is a little more secure with being something that not everyone has.
Very informative. I learned a lot from the information you have detailed here. Thanks for sharing it.
NetGrear makes excellent equipment for computers, and routers are one of their better offering. My only issue with Netgear is their seeming inability to create a router that works with fiberoptics. Here is where Linksys shines.
