I'm a big Michael Crichton fan, but even I had a terrible time choking down his latest novel, Next, which deals with scientific hot topics such as cloning and genetics. While I admittedly found parts of the book interesting, everything else was all wrong. What little there was of a plot was scattered around with awful pacing and terrible cohesion. Certain parts of the book were stone cold serious, while others were borderline comical - only they weren't meant to be. By the end of the book, it just felt as if you were reading one long lecture on the dangers of genetics. Crichton really dropped the ball with this one and should've just wrote an essay on his personal feelings about genetics, which is really what the book was, hidden amongst a terrible excuse for a plot.
