Nintendo Wii: Part Toy, Part Video Game Console By swood on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

The Nintendo Wii was a pretty gutsy move for Nintendo, and it appears to have paid off if sales figures are to say anything of it. As the best selling 7th generation console, this system has expanded the ranks of gamers and attracted many non gamers seeking a 'virtual' experience playing golf or any other realm of activities. To a more serious gamer, however, the novelty of the Wii's controlling mechanism is quickly outlived. While it certainly adds a new dimension in games such as Mario Party, and can be integrated into games in new and creative ways, it is often burdening and inconvenient, even after getting used to it, on other games. The system seems to attract games which are made around the controller, not the system, and they are often amatuerish and shallow. That said, some of the games do manage to push the genre in exciting directions - however, most of them, such as Metriod, Mario Galaxy, and Zelda - are all Nintendo titles. Though sales alone will keep this system going, for me and many other serious games, it's already looking tired.
