Oasis Jr. Locking Mailbox
By Kakoa onRecently we had someone steal some of our mail. We found the empty packages laying on the side of the road not too far from our box. We had had problems with our mailbox not staying closed also, so we decided to take action before anything else happened. We live in the country, so we had limited options on what we could do.
We bought this Oasis Jr. locking mailbox and it has been working great ever since. We had to order it online though because they don't carry this kind of mailbox in stores. I wasn't too happy about the price and the cost of shipping, but we knew we had to take action.
The box comes is different colors, but we bought the solid black one. We wanted it to stick out and be able to stay clean without much maintenance. So far, we have not had to clean it at all. The rain washes almost everything off of the box when it gets dirty.
The way this box works is similar to a US postal service mailbox. To get the mail in, you pull the top door open and put the mail inside. Once you close it, the mail drops down into the bottom section. Once the mail is down there, you can not reach back in to get it out. The only way to get the mail out is to open the bottom section with a key.
If you want to send mail out, there is a clip on the inside of the door you open to drop the mail in with. Just clip the outgoing mail in, shut the door, and raise the little red flag. This part is not secure though, anyone could still get your outgoing mail. So far we have had no problems with this.
One drawback of this type of mailbox is that it usually needs a special post to mount it on. The post is not cheap either! We decided not to buy the post so my husband had to make a special steel mounting plate in order to mount it to the wooden post we already had. If you don't have a way to weld a mounting plate, you will have to buy the mounting post too.

I despise a thief, I am sorry this happened to you but glad you found a good solid one that locks.
I want this! We've been having issues with our mail also...Thanks for the information!
It's unfortunate you've had this problem. :S Glad the new box is working out for you, though.
I know how you feel in a sense. We had teens hitting our mailbox with a bat and we were for ever replacing our mailboxes. So my husband made a heavy duty steel mail box. I would hate to be the one that tries to drive along now and try to hit it with a bat.
This sounds like a really good idea. With as much identity theft that is going around you can never be too careful. My father also lives inthe country and I will see if this is something that would interest him.
We have a similar one. Very good to protect your mail especially if you're away for a weekend or something.
