Oilcloth Rules! By kateri27 on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
I am a proud crafter. I love working with different fabrics and different designs. My most recent obsession is oilcloth. I have been using it to make a variety of different beach totes.
Oilcloth is great because it comes in so many funky retro colors and patterns. I love the bright yellow and oranges with flowers. It's so 1960's I can barely handle it!
Oilcloth is basically vinyl covered with a cotton mesh. It can be used for baby bibs, tablecloths, shelf lining, place mats, and pretty much anything else that can get a little dirty. It is very easy to clean with soap and warm water. Spills wipe up with ease.
It is a little difficult to work with on a sewing machine so if you are planning to do so plan on using your biggest sewing machine needle.
I love crafting with oilcloth and have even found that by simply cutting it with a pinking shear you can make an easy place mat. Try oilcloth you will love it!
Chardplex Oilcloth Purchased at: Sobo Style Price: $8.50 a yard

You ARE pretty crafy, and you seem to know all the secrets. OilCloth is sorta fun to mess with, but is hard to sew by hand. I too love crafting...I make walking sticks, carve and do all kinds of cool stuff. Yes...I sew too. Shhhhh!
I love oilcloth for kitchen tables. I learned that from my mother. :-)
I have not heard anyone talk about oilcloth for a long time. I'm glad to know it's still around and used today.
Oh dear... I feel really strange when things that I grew up with become "retro!"
Couldn't agree more sharkbytes, but might have to invest in some of this sounds pretty useful and available in cool colors as well.
What a great idea for making beach totes with this!
